What was once a mild speculation about Prince Harry’s paternity has turned into something rather gross. Like, when Princess Diana was alive and admitting in a television interview that she had an affair with Captain James Hewitt, most people were shocked and sympathetic. But after her death, the story took a turn. It was mostly because James Hewitt is a dumb famewhore whose one claim to fame was his affair with Diana, and now he pops up every few years to talk about whether he’s Prince Harry’s father. For some of us who are long-time royal watchers, we know the timeline. We know that Hewitt and Diana’s affair happened after she gave birth to Harry. We also know that while Harry and James Hewitt have the same red hair, Harry’s ginger coloring likely comes from the Spencer side of the family. Anyway, James Hewitt has decided to chime in once again.
Putting that rumor to rest. Princess Diana’s former lover James Hewitt opened up about longstanding rumors that he’s Prince Harry’s real dad in a new interview, denying the claims outright.
“Are you Harry’s father?” Australia’s Sunday Night host Melissa Doyle asked Hewitt, now 58, point blank.
“No, I’m not,” he replied in the interview that aired on Sunday, March 12. Asked why he thought the rumors of Harry’s paternity have persisted over the years, the former tank commander responded, “It sells papers. It’s worse for [Harry], probably, poor chap.”
Hewitt and the late Princess Diana met in 1986 when he was brought on as her riding instructor. (Two years after Prince Harry was born.) Around that same time, Diana’s husband, Prince Charles, was rumored to have been seeing his former flame — and current wife — Camilla Parker-Bowles.
“It’s a gradual period and then, you know, suddenly you can’t get enough of each other or see each other as much as you want,” Hewitt says of his whirlwind affair with the princess. He added that he wanted to “whisk her away” from the spotlight. The couple had a low-key relationship, and Hewitt recalled some of those times during the interview. “Well, I’d cook and she’d wash up,” he said. “Just dinner and relaxing and laughing.” He added that he and Diana also enjoyed walks along the beach.
The pair ended their affair when Hewitt was deployed to serve in the Gulf War and their relationship was exposed by the press. Sunday Night also spoke with Diana’s bodyguard Ken Wharfe, who said he often slept on a camp bed in a hallway outside the bedroom when Diana and Hewitt spent time together.
“It was pretty obvious what was happening,” Wharfe said, adding that “it wasn’t for me to moralize on this.”
The last time I wrote about Hewitt and this speculation was 2014, and I said much the same thing: that Harry took after the Spencer side of the family and when you really look at the photos, you can see that Harry and Hewitt really don’t look anything alike beyond the red hair. Some of you said that as Harry gets older, he looks more and more like Prince Charles. Yeah… I’m still not there. I don’t really see that. Now, to me, William absolutely looks like a Windsor man as he gets older. William’s youth was all-Spencer, but past the age of 25/26, those Windsor genes kicked in like a motherf–ker. Anyway… yeah, I believe Harry is a Windsor too, genetically speaking. I just think he takes after the Spencer side.
